Ian trained in London and it was during his fashion education here that he decided to specialize in bridal and evening wear. His training began at Bellville Sassoon (one of London's finest couture houses) specializing in creating gowns for socialites and members of the royal family.

This training was invaluable to Ian as it gave him the knowledge of cut, proportion, balance and wear ability within design. After a decade working for other leading bridal manufacturers in London and the New York, Ian set up his own label in 2003, and went on to become a multi-award winning name in his own right and globally recognised as one of bridal’s most creative and innovative designers in the industry.
Based in London, the collection designed by Ian Stuart ltd was an instant success and attracted worldwide publicity. It continues to grow and prosper today and allows Ian to concentrate on creating collections which truly reflect his passion for innovative bridal design, without any restraints or compromise.
Creating a Collection
Ian’s ability to design original and innovative bridal collections season after season is second to none. He says, “Many aspects influence the evolution of our collection - fabric, colours, music and fashion. I choose fabrics first and then we create new colours with our mill in Italy- we mix yarns, colours and textures to come up with something that others don’t have. Then when the fabrics arrive I play around with them and drape them to see how they behave. Quite often, at this stage the collection and theme of the collection is not yet conceived. I go with my gut feeling, and try to take a new collection into a direction that feels right at that moment. I have my process and it really works for me. One thing I have learned is that putting myself under immense pressure produces better designs.
Inspiration and Style:
Ian’s inspiration comes from so many different places- street art, culture and exhibitions. He loves music, both playing and listening to it. Different kinds of music can inspire him to design different types of dresses as the mood of the music can affect him emotionally. Fabric is also very inspirational and holding a beautiful lace or draping a quality silk over a mannequin can really arouse the creativity!
Ian loves opulence and his classically draped and rushed skirts are a symbol of his romantic gowns - his fitted, antique bodices are a perfect accompaniment to these styles. He has always loved to work with rich fabrics which compliment his sumptuous designs such as taffeta metals and raw silks and has always had a passion for colour.
The 2012 Collection : Killer Queen
His 2012 collection will see Ian yet again uncompromised in his dedication to give brides more unconventional, new and exciting wedding gowns. Drawing inspiration from iconic legends of stage and screen, the collection features an array of classic, romantic and contemporary silhouettes in luxe fabrics with unique embroideries and decorations. An indulgent fairytale colour palette of gold, silver, Hollywood pastels, café and cream conveys the true romanticism of the bridal gown. The focus of the new collection is to make every bride feel like a strong empowered leading lady.
